What is UGC NET?

The National Eligibility Test (NET) also known as UGC NET is conducted to determine the eligibility of candidates for the posts of an Assistant professor or Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) every year. Initially, the test was conducted by CBSE, but from 2018, the National Test Agency (NTA) conducts the NET on behalf of the UGC. For the candidates who are applying for JRF, the upper age limit is 30 years while there is no age limit for the post of Assistant Professor. The UGC NET exam includes two papers for both JRF and AF posts. UGC NET Paper 1 is compulsory for all the candidates while the candidates need to choose the subject of Paper 2. The final merit list will be published based on the scores in both papers.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility: Nationality

The UGC NET Exam is conducted only for Indian nationals. The aim is to select the best candidates for posts of Assistant professors and Junior Research Fellowships or JRFS among Indian nationals for various Indian universities, colleges, and institutes.

 Age Limits and Relaxation

Applying candidates must follow the age criteria of UGC NET as declared by the official notification. The age criteria are given below:

  • There is no maximum age limit for the post of Assistant Professor.
  • Candidates applying for a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) must not be more than 31 years.
  • There is no particular age limit for Lecturer ship.
  • Age relaxation is provided to the reserved category candidates as per the Government of India norms to apply for UGC NET JRF:

 Educational Qualifications

As per UGC NET Exam Notification, the educational qualifications are :

Qualification: Applying candidates must have a Master’s degree in a relevant field from a recognized board or university.

Appearing Candidates: Those candidates appearing in their final examinations, completing their postgraduation or awaiting results can also apply for the exam.

Marks: A minimum of 55% aggregate marks should be scored by General candidates, Relaxation of 5% is allowed for reserved candidates (SC/ ST/ OBC/ PWD/ Transgender, and others)

How to Apply for UGC NET ?

  • Visit the official website of UGC NET.
  • Click on Apply online to register.
  • Enter the personal details, valid email ID, and mobile number.
  • On successful registration, an application number will be sent on the registered email ID and mobile number.
  • Login again and select the preferred subject, position, and preferred exam centre.
  • Upload the scanned copies of the photograph and signature in the specified format.
  • Pay the application fee using online payment methods such as Debit Card/ Credit Card/ Net Banking.
  • Submit the application fees.
  • Take a printout of the application form and fee receipt for future references.

Application Fees

Candidates had to pay an application fee to complete their application procedure. The application fees of UGC NET  for different categories of candidates are given in the table below:

Application Correction

NTA provides the correction facility to every registered candidate individually.  Candidates were allowed to rectify any mistake that might have occurred during filling up application forms. Candidates cannot correct after the last date of the correction facility is over.

Note:

  • No candidates were allowed to submit the application form after the last date.
  • It is advised that candidates keep a printed copy of the filled application form and the payment receipt for future references.
  • Any alteration or discrepancy may cause rejection of the application form.
Admit Card

The Admit Card for UGC NET will be released by the NTA for every successfully registered candidate. It is advisable that candidates carry at least 2 copies of their admit card into the exam. No candidate shall be allowed to appear in the exam without a valid Admit Card.

How to Download UGC NET Admit Card?
  • Step 1: Visit the official website of UGC NET.
  • Step 2: Click on the Download Admit Card option.
  • Step 3: Enter the details like application number, date of birth, security pin as visible on the screen, and other necessary details as required.
  • Step 4: Click on the Submit button.
  • Step 5: View, download and make a print of the UGC NET Admit Card.

Candidates are advised to check all the details on the Admit Card as soon as they are printed. All the details mentioned should match with the ones provided by the candidate at the time of filling the UGC NET Application Form.

In case of any issue with downloading the admit card or error/ discrepancy in the Admit Card, candidates must contact the authorities and get their Admit Card corrected immediately.

In case of such errors, NTA’s official website declares, “In such cases, candidates would appear in the examination with the already downloaded Admit Card. However, NTA will take necessary action to make corrections in the record later.”

Exam Pattern

The UGC NET is conducted in two parts through online CBT mode. Candidates need to clear both the papers of the exam to crack it. UGC NET Exam is a computer-based test having multiple-choice questions.

The exam includes two papers. UGC NET Paper 1 is compulsory for all the candidates while the candidates need to choose the subject of Paper 2. Some of the important details about the UGC NET Exam are:

UGC NET Results

The UGC NET Result  shall be prepared on the basis of the final answer key. The results shall be released by the authorities individually for every examinee through online mode. Candidates can check their results on the official website.

The UGC NET result has to be downloaded by individual candidates from the official website of the authority through their own login credentials. The result shall contain their performance in the examination. The authority will not send any result to the candidates individually through post or other offline means.

The result of UGC NET will contain paper-wise and overall marks scored in the exam by the individual candidate, along with percentages obtained. Based on their scores, candidates shall know their qualifying status for the posts of JRF and Assistant Professor across the country. The details mentioned in the result of UGC NET are:

How to Check UGC NET Result ?

To check the results of UGC NET , follow the steps given below:

  • Step 1: Go to the official website of UGC NET.
  • Step 2: Click on the UGC NET score on the Homepage.
  • Step 3: On the result page, enter Application Number, Date of Birth, and Security Pin as asked.
  • Step 4: Click on the Submit button.
  • Step 5: The NTA UGC NET Result will be displayed on your screen. Download the result and keep a copy of it for future references.

Selection Process

The subject-wise and category-wise merit list is prepared on the basis of the marks obtained in the exam. The selection procedure for a UGC NET candidate is given in the following steps:

  • Candidates of the General category need to acquire at least 40% aggregate marks in both Papers I and II. Reserved candidates need to acquire at least 35% aggregate marks in both papers I and II.
  • The qualification of the number of candidates for Assistant Professor should be equal to 6% of the total number of candidates appearing in both the papers.
  • The qualification of the number of candidates for JRF should be equal to 1% of the total number of candidates appearing in both papers.
  • The aggregate percentage of both paper I and II in a particular subject, corresponding to the number of slots arrived at, will decide the qualifying cut-off for selecting Assistant Professor in that subject. All other subject-wise qualifying cut-offs shall be determined in the same way.
  • Out of the total number of qualified candidates, candidates who had applied for “Eligibility for Assistant Professor and JRF both” shall be taken into consideration for the post of JRF.
  • Available JRF slots are allocated among different categories on the basis of the subject according to the Government’s Reservation policy.
  • The aggregate percentage of both paper I and II in a particular subject, corresponding to the number of slots arrived at, will decide the qualifying cut-off for selecting JRF in that subject. All other subject-wise qualifying cut-offs shall be determined in the same way.
