List of top 10 Institutes in India – Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal released the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) list 2020 and named the top educational institutes in the country. In this ranking of higher education institutions, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has secured the first position in the over all category. The Institute of Science, Bangalore has been ranked second, while IIT Delhi came third. Along with this, the top 10 institutes of this year include JIT and IU including IITs.

Let’s know about this year’s top 10 institutes

IIT Madras

Located in Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, was established in 1959. This is the third IIT established in collaboration with the Government of India. No.1 in the national rankings, this institute is not only an excellent research center but is also known all over the country for teaching and industrial consultancy. The special thing is that half of the 620-acre campus of IIT Madras is a protected forest area, with many deer, 40 species of butterfly and 100 kinds of birds. It is the most environmentally friendly institute in the country.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISC)

The Indian Institute of Science was established on 27 May 1909 by Jamsetji Nasarwan Ji Tata. It is the first such institute in the country, formed by public private partnership. The institute, which ranked second in the national rankings, has been at the forefront of science for more than a century. Started with two departments – General and Applied Chemistry and Electrical Technology, the institute today operates 40 departments in six divisions.

IIT Delhi

IIT Delhi, known as the College of Engineering, was established in 1961. Located in Hauz Khas in South Delhi, the campus of this institute is spread over 320 acres. Ranked third in the country in the national rankings, IIT Delhi is surrounded by lush green areas. It has 13 hostels and shopping malls, 11 multidisciplinary centers with its own water and electricity supply.

IIT Mumbai

IIT Mumbai, the country’s second and the first institute established with foreign aid, was established in the year 1958. In 1961, the Parliament declared the Indian Institute of Technology as an “Institute of National Importance”. Since then, IIT Mumbai grew stronger as it developed and emerged as one of the top technical institutes in the world. This institute is seen as the Leading Institute in the field of Engineering and Research all over the world.

IIT Kharagpur

The country’s first IIT, IIT Kharagpur, was established in the year 1950 near Hijli Bandhi Griha. At the beginning of its first session there were 42 teachers and 224 students. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, laid the foundation of the new building of the college in 1952. Earlier this college was run in Hijli Detention Camp. Today the institute has the largest science and technology library in Asia, with 3.8 lakh documents, 1,250 print journals and 40,000 e-books.

IIT Kanpur

IIT Kanpur, one of the top engineering institutes in India, was established in the year 1959. IIT-Kanpur, which started in a single room in the canteen of the Agricultural Gardens in Kanpur, today has a campus of 1,000 acres and more than 5,400 students. This college is about 16 km from Kanpur city. The road is located at Nankari in Kalyanpur.

IIT Guwahati

The 7th IIT of the country, IIT Guwahati was established in the year 1994. The academic session started here in the year 1995. It is the only institute in India that was ranked in the top 50 in the Times Higher Education Global 100. The IIT is spread over 285 hectares, 20 kilometers from the city of Guwahati. It has Brahmaputra river on one side and mountains and open fields on the other side.

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU)

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), ranked 7th in the ranking, is one of the leading and popular universities in the country. It was established in the year 1966 by an Act of Parliament. JNU, ??which came into existence in 1969 after three years of establishment, gave a new perspective to the Indian university system. JNU is the first institute in the country to offer a 5-year MA program in foreign languages. It has also been named ‘University of Excellence’ by the UGC.

The University of Roorkee

The University of Roorkee from 1948 to 2001 and the IIT Roorkee, known as the Thomson College of Civil Engineering from 1853 to 1948, were founded in 1847 by Sir James Thomson, the Lieutenant Governor of British India. It was awarded university status in 1949 and in 2001 it was recognized as IIT. The institute is one of the finest institutes in the world, considered a trend-setter for research and education in the fields of science, technology and engineering.

The Banaras Hindu University (BHU)

The Banaras Hindu University, popularly known as BHU, was founded by Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya. Its foundation stone was laid on 4 February 1916 by Lord Hording, then Viceroy. This university is considered the largest residential university in Asia. It is also called Oxford of the East. Spread over 1300 acres, the institute attracts students from around 34 countries from all over the world.
